Parking Reservations at Ski Resorts
On weekends and holidays, both Palisades Tahoe and Northstar California require parking reservations. This system is a great way to manage peak traffic, but it does mean planning ahead.
At Palisades Tahoe, there is free, first-come-first served parking during the week and free reservations for the upcoming weekend are released each Tuesday at 12 pm and 7 pm, with paid options available as well. There are also carpool and transit options. Check here for more Palisades parking details →
Northstar uses a similar system for select lots on busy days, most often in the Village View lot during weekends and holiday periods. Reserving ahead guarantees your space and helps reduce the long morning backups that often form on Highway 267. You can find all the information about Northstar parking here →
Parking can get crazy and resort policies can shift as the season goes on, so it is always best to check before you arrive and plan how you’re going to access the resort beforehand!
Chain Controls and Road Conditions

- Caltrans QuickMap for chain requirements
- Magnifeye for live traffic cameras
- Local forecasts from National Weather Service
Understanding R1, R2, and R3 chain levels helps you know what to expect. Even AWD and 4WD vehicles can require chains in certain situations, so carrying a set that fits your tires is always wise.
Here is what each level means in simple terms:
R1: Chains are required for two-wheel-drive vehicles. AWD and 4WD with snow tires are usually allowed without chains.
R2: Chains are required for most vehicles. AWD and 4WD may be allowed without chains only if equipped with proper snow tires.
R3: Chains are required on all vehicles, including AWD and 4WD. These conditions are rare and usually occur during major storms.
These levels can change quickly as storms move through the Sierra, which is why checking Caltrans QuickMap and Magnifeye before and during your drive is always helpful.
TART Connect
TART Connect offers free on demand shuttles throughout many North Lake Tahoe and Truckee neighborhoods. It is one of the easiest ways to reach ski areas or downtown hubs without worrying about parking.
Park and Ride lots in Truckee and Tahoe City are also helpful on busy weekends or storm days!
Lift Ticket and Gear Reservations
Planning early not only helps you save on lift tickets, it also means you can skip the morning ticket lines and head straight to the snow! The same goes for lessons and rental gear. Holiday periods and busy weekends fill quickly, so reserving what you need before you arrive helps your days feel relaxed and effortless.
