9. Scenic Beauty and Wildlife

Top Spots: Tahoe Rim Trail, Donner Memorial State Park

What to See: Snow-covered forests, panoramic lake views, winter rabbits

Eco-Tip: Respect wildlife and follow Leave No Trace principles

North Lake Tahoe has lots of animals who have adapted to living in the cold, high altitude of the Sierra Nevadas. Here are some of the animals that call this region home and if you’re very lucky you might catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures!

Coyotes: Coyotes are very common in North Lake Tahoe and can often be seen even in winter, foraging or hunting in open meadows or near forest edges.

Mule Deer: Mule deer remain active in winter, foraging for food under the snow, and are commonly seen in the Tahoe area.

Sierra Nevada Red Fox: This species is extremely rare and critically endangered in California. While they are present in the Tahoe region, spotting one is very uncommon.

Mountain Lions: Mountain lions are present but elusive. They primarily roam higher elevations and avoid human contact, making sightings rare (thank goodness!)

Bobcats: These medium-sized cats are more common than mountain lions and can occasionally be seen hunting small prey in forested or open areas.

Beavers: Beavers are present in the Tahoe area and remain active near rivers and streams, but they may reduce activity or retreat to lodges during extreme winter conditions.

Douglas Squirrels: Active year-round, these small, vocal squirrels are a frequent sight in Tahoe forests during winter.

Martens: These small predators are present in the Tahoe region, but sightings are uncommon due to their elusive nature.

Birds

Bald Eagles and Great Horned Owls: Bald eagles are present in Tahoe during the winter, especially near open water where they hunt. Great horned owls are also year-round residents in the area and can be heard at night.

Clark’s Nutcracker and Mountain Chickadees: These birds are typical of high-altitude forests and are active in the winter months.

Winter is a stunning time to explore Tahoe’s natural beauty. Enjoy serene hikes along the Tahoe Rim Trail or snap photos of Donner Lake’s icy expanse. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as snowshoe hares and bald eagles, but remember to observe from a distance.
