Experience the Great Outdoors in Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe campgrounds are generally open from late May through Labor Day weekend in early September. Along the north shore of Lake Tahoe, Tahoe State Recreation Area Campground provides visitors with access to fishing, picnic areas, swimming, bike trails, a beach area, surfing, windsurfing, restrooms, and drinking water. You can purchase firewood on-site for marshmallow roasting, and if you decide to stay for a night just to experience a night in Tahoe’s natural environment, be sure to keep food in the mandatory bear-resistant food lockers. During the day, go biking on along Lake Tahoe itself on the gorgeous bike path that leads from the campground into town.

Also on the north shore is Lake Forest Campground, located near Lake Forest Beach and Pomin Park. Enjoy a fun day on Lake Forest Beach partaking in swimming, windsurfing, bird watching, picnicking, sightseeing, and playing horseshoes, or play baseball and soccer at Pomin Park.

On Lake Tahoe’s western shore, you’ll find campgrounds in D.L. Bliss State Park and Sugar Pine Point State Park. At D.L. Bliss State Park, visitors can enjoy swimming and scuba diving in Lake Tahoe, sunbathing at Lester Beach and Calawee Cove, hiking on trails like Balancing Rock and Rubicon, and picnicking. In particular, Lester Beach is popular for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Rubicon Trail is also remarkable for the Rubicon Point, a promontory from which you can see as deep as one hundred feet into Lake Tahoe’s depths.

Sugar Pine Point State Park, meanwhile, stands out from other Lake Tahoe camping locales for providing winter campsites. The forests here are beautiful, and amenities to be enjoyed here include a beach, pier, picnic area, and the historic Hellman-Ehrman Estate for touring. Activities include hiking, swimming, fishing, cross-country skiing, and a nature center near the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion.
