Adults of the group will want to push the pause button a moment for a good glass of wine. Opened in 1989, the winery is California’s highest and coldest winery! The winery – inside a two-story barn on the Truckee River – produces over 2,500 cases of wine a year. They specialize in single-vineyard varietals, and you’ll want to taste them all yourself. The winery has limited hours, 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at 10061 South River Street in Truckee. They accommodate curbside pickup daily. The caboose is from the Southern Pacific Railroad that was used in the area, and even its paint color matches the original SP paint scheme! Inside, you’ll learn about the first Transcontinental Railroad, logging railroads, tourism by rail, and much more about what the railroad did for the town. There’s a kid’s play train, logging exhibit, as well as an example of a sleeper cabin.
Old Truckee Jail Museum
As the town of Truckee grew, so did its need for law and order. When you’re touring historic downtown Truckee, make sure to stop in and see how the town housed criminals for nearly 90 years. The historic jail was built in 1875 and used until 1964. Inside you’ll find exhibits and information about the jail’s construction, the first prisoner, the first female prisoner, and more. The museum is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on “Truckee Thursdays” 5-9 p.m.
