The museum is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on “Truckee Thursdays” 5-9 p.m.

Truckee Railroad Museum

Head to historic downtown Truckee to explore area history. Make sure to add a stop to the Truckee Railroad Museum to the list. It’s located in the caboose right next to the historic railroad station in town. The caboose is from the Southern Pacific Railroad that was used in the area, and even the paint color on the caboose matches the original SP paint scheme! Inside, you’ll learn about the first Transcontinental Railroad, logging railroads, tourism by rail, and more. There’s a kids’ play train, logging exhibit, as well as an example of a sleeper cabin.

Truckee River Winery

Adults of the group will want to pause a moment for a good glass of wine. The winery opened in 1989 and is California’s highest and coldest winery! The two-story barn on the Truckee River produces over 2,500 cases of wine a year. The winery specializes in single-vineyard varietals you’ll want to taste for yourself. The winery has limited hours, 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at 10061 South River Street in Truckee. They accommodate curbside pickup daily. Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum

The park is located in Truckee in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. The well-known alpine park offers plenty of entertainment, like boating, picnicking, fishing, water skiing, hiking, and more. As part of your visit, make sure to explore the Pioneer Monument, built to commemorate the California emigrants that traveled west throughout the mid-1800s. Step into the visitor center and explore exhibits spotlighting things like the Emigrant Experience, the Donner Party, the Land of Washoe, Chinese construction of the railroad, and even early motoring adventures over Donner Pass. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, with restrooms open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The visitor center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at 12593 Donner Pass Road in Truckee.

Historic Downtown Truckee

Walk the streets of the historic downtown Truckee. The town was originally known as Gray’s Station upon its founding in 1863. It became the Central Pacific Railroad’s railroad station for the area in 1867 and was renamed Truckee. Many historic buildings still stand today, and house local businesses including shops, dining, and other services. Stop by the Old Truckee Jail Museum and learn about the town. The railroad station is still in use, and Amtrak makes stops there on its route between Chicago and San Francisco.
