Tahoe is home to the largest alpine lake in the country, and some say home to the “most beautiful drive in America.” The latter may sound boastful, but it may also be the truth. With hauntingly beautiful views of the amazingly clear Lake Tahoe and the surrounding snow-covered, rugged mountain tops, this scenic alpine retreat truly is one of the most beautiful places in the country, and one of the most popular too. A Little History
Lake Tahoe has been a popular vacation spot for a while now, but the lake really got on the map in the roaring 20s when it became the place to be, where all those successful, wealthy California entrepreneurs could gather and get away from it all. It became a vacation home for the rich and famous, and many of those mansions are still around today. The Tallac Historic Site is home to the summer estates of three of those wealthy San Franciscans, and is worth the visit if you’re interested in the area’s history.
Of course, you can’t talk about Tahoe’s history without talking about the Washoe Native Americans, logging, and mining. Lake Tahoe was the epicenter of the Washoe territory and they considered Cave Rock on the southeastern shoreline to be a sacred place. Cave Rock is also one of the best spots on the lake to take in a colorful sunset. Approached from the water side, you can see The Lady of the Lake.
The past remnants of the mining history of the area still remain as well. Thousands of travelers on the search for precious ores traveled through the area on their way west, and many historic structures remain, as do the aftereffects of the extensive logging that took place during that time.
Variety
Whether you’re looking for spacious vacation homes and condos perched on craggy mountainsides overlooking the valley below and the surrounding mountain ranges or rentals on the lake, take your pick, as it’s all here in North Tahoe! Fun Activities Year Round
Of course, there’s skiing and all the snow-related activities you want, from downhill, Nordic, and cross-country skiing to snowboarding over slaloms and snowshoeing through the quiet wilderness. There’s ice skating, sledding, snow biking and curling. North Tahoe has 12 downhill ski resorts, including Squaw Valley, so you’ll sure to find the slopes you crave.
Go backpacking or hiking along one of the trails in the area. For an easy hike, hit the Eagle Lake Trail. It’s a dog-friendly uphill hike with amazing views of Lake Tahoe from the top of the hill. For those who love to rough it, backpack through the Desolation Wilderness, also known as the Devil’s Valley, amid scattered pines and western junipers growing along the rocky, craggy terrain. Be on the lookout for mule deer, black bear, rabbits and elusive coyote, bobcats and badgers as you hike.
Want to stay inside? Shop ‘til you drop! You’ll be sure to find something you didn’t know you had to have while browsing the shops in Incline Village or Kings Beach. You can also pack everyone in the car and take the scenic Lake Tahoe-Eastshore Drive, with slightly less than thirty miles of the prettiest scenery you’ve ever seen, with views of Lake Tahoe and the snowcapped Sierras!
