A Bit of History
Historic Truckee is located just a few miles north of North Lake Tahoe. This lumber and mill town began life as stop over on the old Trans-Sierra wagon road in the late 1800s, and later as a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. If you’re looking for a place that still has that Old West, old-timey feel to it, then head to Truckee. The downtown still boasts historic buildings that have survived fires, blizzards and more over the years.
Of course, the most famous bit of history is the sad story of the Donner-Reed party. This ill-fated group of settlers had nothing but bad luck as they traveled west. Donner Memorial State Park is dedicated to travelers and the Park’s Visitor’s Center features exhibits on the Donner Party, local Native Americans, and the builders of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The Park also fronts Donner Lake, has a short hiking trail, and is home to the Emigrant Trail Museum and Pioneer Monument. This relatively small park is deeply steeped in history, has amazing views and is worth a trip.
Why Stay in Truckee?
Truckee has a little bit of everything to offer, and is not as crowded as Tahoe (most of the time). Choose chalets with wildly stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges, family cabins with views of pristine, crystal clear lakes and condos with views of historic towns with the western flavor and atmosphere of the past but with the attitude and energy of the present.
Truckee has art galleries featuring Native American and local area artists, wine tastings and beer pubs, five-star restaurants and local hole-in-the-wall diners. Give Pianeta Restaurant a try for dinner, or hit Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats for something more livelily. And there is always something going on in Truckee. Truckee Thursdays and the Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop are just a few of the local events to enjoy.
Enjoy the Outdoors in Truckee
Enjoy all those snow-centric sports you love while you’re here. You’ll be able to get your fill of downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and more, not to mention snow-biking, snowmobiling, plus ice-skating and horse-drawn sleigh rides, too!
Hike, bike or snowshoe to the Martis Peak Fire Lookout for a panoramic view of the entire area. And if you’re into fishing, there are many great spots to try in the area. Donner Lake has over 30 public piers, including an accessible pier, and you’ll be landing rainbow and cutthroat trout in no time whether you fish from the pier or from your boat or kayak. Boca Dam and Reservoir and Stampede Reservoir offer rainbow, brook, and brown trout along with Kokanee salmon. You can try your luck almost anywhere on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. If you’re not into fishing, rent a kayak and head out on the lake or river. Take a lazy tube ride or just float around under the bright sky watching the clouds.
When the weather permits, practice your golf game with a backdrop of the Sierra Mountains. The Coyote Moon Golf Course includes natural rock formations in its Brad Bell designed course. Other courses to try include the Tahoe Donner Golf Club and the Old Greenwood Golf Course.
Airbnb Truckee Amenities
Whether you’re inside or outside, it’s all about the view. It goes without saying that all of our Truckee rentals Airbnb have private balconies or decks for enjoying that view. Many of our rentals have hot tubs out on those decks and balconies that will ease away all those sore muscles after a long hard day of snowshoeing across the valley.
Fully equipped kitchens are ready to show off your culinary skills. If you didn’t catch your limit out on the lake today, stop by a local meat and seafood market and pick up something fresh to grill. Many of our private Truckee rentals Airbnb feature grills out on the deck. Nothing tastes better than freshly caught trout when it’s been grilled under the stars.
