Truckee Museums

Between its colorful local history and its striking natural environment, it’s no wonder that Truckee is home to a collection of entertaining and informative museums. Below, we’ve compiled a brief list of just a few of the best museums you’ll encounter in Truckee. Read on to learn more!

Fascinating Exhibits and Insight into Truckee

Nestled inside of the Donner Memorial State Park, the Emigrant Trail Museum explores the history of Truckee and the surrounding region through the stories of local Native American tribes like the Washoe, the infamous Donner Party, the construction of the transcontinental railroad, and the early days of vehicular travel over Donner Pass. Adjacent to the museum are several sites that will also add to your experience, including the Pioneer Monument (which depicts the dramatic snow conditions that the Donner Party faced), the Murphy family cabin from the time of the Donner Party, and a self-guided nature trail that spans half a mile.

Rather than a remote part of the wilderness, you’ll find the Old Jail Museum right in the heart of downtown historic Truckee, one block north of Commercial Row at the corner of Jibboom Street and Spring Street. This historic jailhouse from the 19th century is one of the only surviving Wild West jails in the Western United States, as well as one of Truckee’s only remaining original buildings. Nicknamed “the old Bastille,” a French term for fortress, this jailhouse was constructed from walls of local stone made thirty-two inches thick at their lowest points, with no windows besides small vents for each cell lined with two-inch steel bars. The old Bastille is said to have once held the likes of “Baby Face” Nelson, “Machine Gun” Kelly, and “Ma” Spinelli and her gang.

Finally, the Truckee Railroad Museum is also located in downtown Truckee, inside of the historic railroad station. Here, you can see an original caboose from the Southern Pacific Railroad, pictures and artifacts from the railroad era in Truckee, railroad-related recreations, and stories that go into how the railroad system had a direct role in the development and formation of Truckee, including tourism, logging, and more.
