Long Lake

When you think about your upcoming Tahoe adventure, most likely you picture long days frolicking on the shores or on the waters of our most famous lake, Lake Tahoe itself, but you may be surprised to learn there are other smaller lakes that are definitely worth visiting as well. If you’re planning a trip to Tahoe in the near (or not so near!) future, why not skip the crowds and head to some of these smaller, more peaceful, bodies of water instead?

Long Lake Tahoe National Forest

Located off Highway 80 at Carr Lake Road, Long Lake has been a local favorite for those with pets, or those who just want to escape the hustle and bustle of Lake Tahoe. A rope swing will bring whoops of laughter as you or the more daring members of your party take turns swinging out and dropping into the cold depths of Long Lake. The crystal-clear water and secluded location surrounded by tall trees make Long Lake a very desirable place to be. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trails as well, making this spot very pet-friendly!

Echo Lakes

Located on the west side of Lake Tahoe, these twin lakes are especially fun with swimmers and fishermen in the summer and in the winter, they are a great place to practice your ice skating! Hiking the trails that surround the Echo Lakes is another popular pastime.

Fallen Leaf Lake

Open for summer fun mostly, the season for Fallen Leaf Lake starts on May 11 this year and ends October 13. After October, weather conditions make it too treacherous to get back to this secluded spot and the trails that surround it. Your summer hijinks will be memorable ones as the cool waters help beat the heat better than a dip in a tamer and less scenic pool. Fallen Leaf Lake is located near the south shores of Lake Tahoe.

Donner Lake

Donner Lake is one of the more Popular Water Recreation Sites in the area. Located near The North Shore of Lake Tahoe, although popular, it is still less crowded than the lake our town is named after and is a wonderful place to take part in water sports, including stand-up Paddleboarding and even a triathlon competition!

Spooner Lake

This small lake is easy to get to, but never seems to be crowded. Located off Highway 50 on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, the shallow waters found in Spooner Lake make it a popular fishing spot.
