Bar of America

When you’re staying with us in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, you won’t want to just go to just any bar for food, drinks and entertainment. No, you’ll want to go to America’s bar, the aptly named Bar of America that is committed to offering “friendly and embracing service” with a tasty and sustainable menu. So, mosey on down to have yourself a real good time!

History of One of the Best North Lake Tahoe Bars

The Bar of America has been open for more than 40 years, entertaining locals and visitors as it aims to continue to do in the years to come. Before that, the space was occupied by a stove and tin-ware shop, a Victorian hotel, and a few other restaurants.

Food

Grab yourself some campfire grilled cuisine when you stop in lunch or dinner at one of the top North Lake Tahoe bars. Perhaps you’ll want seafood, such as a blackened salmon sandwich or blackened fish tacos. Or maybe you’ll want the All-American chargrilled burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and mayonnaise. For lighter fare, grab yourself a half sandwich with a soup or salad. And don’t forget about dessert! Help yourself to campfire s’mores that you cook at your table or get a hot fudge sundae to cool down, among other choices.

Happy Hour

It just isn’t a bar without happy hour drinks, with Happy Hour held on weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m. The bar has a wide selection of wines or one of the wittily named specialty cocktails, such as a Jack the Ripper, the Boneyard, the De-Railed, or a Cock-tail that’s stirred with a rooster’s tail feather.

Location and Hours

The Bar of America stands at 10040 Donner Pass Road. Look for the American flag and star-spangled shield sign! The bar is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with breakfast served on the weekends. The bar opens at 11 a.m. on Mondays through Fridays and earlier at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The bar does not close its doors before 11:30 p.m. on Sundays to Thursdays and not before 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are recommended.

Nearby Attractions

Another bonus of Bar of America is that it sits right at the start of Historic Downtown Truckee, where you’ll find plenty to do after your meal, from sitting at local coffee shops where you can watch the people pass by, to visiting fascinating museums that showcase the core parts of Truckee’s unique and storied history. Take a look at our nearby attractions below!

Old Jail Museum

The Old Jail Museum is one of Truckee’s main attractions and can be found right downtown just a four-minute walk from Bar of America! The museum consists of a historic 19th century jailhouse and is one of the last remaining old western jails in the country. The museum is free and is open seasonally on summer weekends on Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 4PM. You can schedule a private group tour for just $2 a person as well!

Truckee Railroad Museum

Housed in an historical caboose, this fascinating museum can be found a quick walk across the street from Bar of America. You’ll learn about how the railroad helped the initial commerce trade of the area with logging railroads, and how tourist rail travel helped share this area with the rest of the nation! The museum is a tribute to Truckee’s legacy as well and includes other exhibits and memorabilia through which you can discover Truckee’s history. Hours are Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM, and Holidays 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission is free, but a small donation is encouraged!
