Where to Go for Fun in the Sun
To begin, Truckee beaches can be split into two categories: beaches around Donner Lake and beaches on the northern shore of Lake Tahoe.
At Donner Lake, there is West End Beach, Tahoe Donner Beach Club, and China Cove Beach.
China Cove is accessible through Donner Memorial State Park on the eastern shore of the lake, with the beach located on the southern shore. It is a pleasant beach surrounded by lush greenery. Tahoe Donner Beach Club is a peaceful private beach open for Tahoe Donner residents from late May to early October, but if you’re staying in one of our Truckee vacation rentals, you may have access.
West End Beach is, unsurprisingly, located on the western shore of Donner Lake. At ten acres, this day-use beach is the largest and most popular of Truckee’s beaches. You’ll find a nice beach area, a basketball court, a tennis court, a fishing area, picnicking areas, horseshoe pits, a swimming area, volleyball courts, two playgrounds, a snack shack, boat storage and parking, and rentals for boats, kayaks, paddleboats, and stand-up paddleboards (SUP). West End Beach also has a covered pavilion that can be rented out for get-togethers and other special events, such as weddings. Admission ranges from $3.00 to $4.00 for a day and $25.00 to $40.00 for non-resident season passes. Dogs are not allowed on the beach.
On Lake Tahoe’s northern shore, King’s Beach State Recreation Area has the closest beach. It’s located just a short drive from Truckee and has 1,700 feet of public beach shoreline for visitors and locals to enjoy. Here, you’ll find amenities similar to those at West End Beach, including volleyball courts, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, picnic areas, a playground, and rentals for all types of watercraft. Enjoy a day of jet skiing, paddle boating, boating, kayaking, and parasailing.
