Tahoe fishing

When you come to a lake town for vacation, especially one like Lake Tahoe, you’ve probably planned plenty of lake activities. Swimming, snorkeling, boating, or just laying out on the shore for some extra sun can occupy your time for the whole trip. Anglers of the group won’t be able to resist the urge to cast a line and may even try to plan a trip around when their favorite Lake Tahoe fish species will be biting most.

Trout

There are many types of trout swimming the waters of Lake Tahoe. Rainbow trout are likely to bit most during May to mid-November, brown and brook trout prefer early summer, and cutthroat trout are fewer, but enjoy the water most in the spring and summer.

Bass

If you’re casting a line into the lake in search of largemouth or smallmouth bass, make sure to spend your time in and around Tahoe Keys. It’s the only section of the lake that has really good numbers of each due to its warmer, shallower water. Both are most active in the late spring and early summer, during their spawning season.

Many Lake Tahoe Fish Species to Choose From

While trout and bass are what you’ll find at the end of your line the most, you may find yourself hooking others like crappie, bluegill, whitefish, sculpin, and even small catfish, each with spring and fall times for best results. You may even hook a huge goldfish! The invasive species was introduced to the lake when someone released it without knowing the impact it would have.

Year-Round

Lake Tahoe is great for fishing year-round, and there are several species biting no matter how bundled up you are. No matter what time of year you’re here, you can tell your latest Tahoe fish story about Mackinaw (Lake) trout with a high season of March-June, Kokanee – which have a high season of July-October.
