North Lake Tahoe

Climbing

Eagle Creek Canyon

Map

Located on Lake Tahoe’s west side near Emerald Bay, Eagle Creek Canyon offers diverse climbing routes with stunning views of the lake. While climbing is possible year-round on dry rocks, it’s important to check conditions before you head out by checking the Tahoe Basin Management Unit of Desolation Wilderness online information. Be aware that most climbs in the area feature granite formations that can get very hot under the sun, especially in the summer and wilderness rules prioritize clean climbing and prohibit power drills so be prepared! Last but not least, be sure to register at the trailhead with the ranger and have fun!

Lover’s Leap

Map

The entrance path via the Pioneer Trail allows quick access to all routes on Lover’s Leap – an impressive vertical granite formation ranging from 250 to nearly 600 feet in height. It boasts numerous cracks intersected by horizontal dikes, making routes more manageable. Though some of the 250 routes are bolt protected, many are traditionally protected so whether you’re bouldering or looking for multi-pitch climbs, there’s something for everyone at Lover’s Leap! While popular areas can get crowded during summer weekends, hidden classics and adventure routes provide ample opportunities for solitude. If you’re looking for a ton of route options for every type of climb and skill level, Lover’s Leap is the place to go!

Donner Summit

Map

Donner Summit, a climbing gem near Donner Lake and Truckee, offers climbers high-quality granite and a variety of climbing styles. The climbing areas span from Donner Pass Road all the way to Interstate 80, and are accessible via these routes. Summer is clearly the prime season for climbing in North Lake Tahoe but if you’re looking to beat the crowds, you can find incredible climbing conditions in the spring and fall too. As winter sets in, snow will cover most of the summit, but a few crags can be climbed year-round. While popular walls like Snowshed attract many climbers, hidden gems await those willing to explore further. For a perfect ending to a day of sending, enjoy a refreshing dip in Donner Lake and relax on the dock with some beers!

If you’re looking for more great climbing spots in Truckee, this site shows where the best bouldering, trad and rock climbing are, plus the heights, grades and routes of each!
