What to Know Before You Go
There are a number of marinas located all along the shores of Lake Tahoe. If you find yourself in the North Tahoe area, try Tahoe City Marina or North Tahoe Marina. If you’re on the southern shore, Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club and Ski Run Marina are all close by. Along the west coast of the lake, Homewood High & Dry Marina and Meeks Bay Resort and Marina will have you covered. Many of these sites charge around $5.00 to launch a boat and $7.00 for day-use parking.
Unless you have your own sailboat, it’s likely that you’ll need to employ a charter service company in order to get your sailing fix.
Tahoe Sailing Charters is based out of Tahoe City Marina and offers sailing cruises daily throughout the summer on their fifty-foot Santa Cruz dubbed the “Tahoe Cruz.” The company offers afternoon and sunset sailing cruises with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, departing at 12:00pm, 2:30pm, and 5:30pm. Afternoon cruises are priced at $50.00 per child under the age of twelve and $60.00 per adult. Sunset cruises are priced at $70.00 per person.
For sailing lessons, Sailing Venture based out of Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club will be the way to go. As the only sailing instructors certified by the ASA (American Sailing Association) on Lake Tahoe, Sailing Ventures is the best place for those new to sailing to learn the ropes, or for a refresher after not having sailed in a long time. Lake Tahoe has challenging winds and waves that require a lot of technical prowess; it’s extremely helpful to have expert sailors to assist you.
Two-hour non-certificate introduction classes are priced at $89.00 per couple during the off-season and $195.00 per couple during peak season, or $140.00 per person for a private lesson. Class packs are also offered for ASA certification depending on the length of boat you want to work with. Twenty-two foot boats range from $30.00 per person and class to $40.00 per person and class, while twenty-seven to thirty-two foot boats will cost between $50.00 and $60.00 per person, per class.
